864 Triple M turns 100 (formerly 4GR)
On August 16, 2025, 864 Triple M (formerly known as 4GR) celebrated an extraordinary milestone: 100 years of broadcasting. As Queensland’s oldest commercial radio station, 4GR made its inaugural broadcast in 1925, right here in Toowoomba. A century on, its impact continues to echo across our region as a trusted voice, a community connector, and a champion of local business.
As someone who had the privilege of serving as General Manager of 864 Triple M Darling Downs, I’ve seen firsthand the role regional radio plays in keeping communities informed, entertained and united. From bushfires to floods, local footy wins to small-town triumphs, this station has been the heartbeat of our community.
For business, local radio has long been a lifeline. It remains an accessible and effective way to reach audiences. Generations of businesses from family-run cafes to national retailers have grown their customer base thanks to the airwaves of 4GR.
But it’s more than just commerce. 864 Triple M has long been a storyteller for Toowoomba. It has shared the voices of our farmers, tradies, artists, sports teams, and school kids. It has championed local causes, supported countless charity appeals, and created a platform where regional issues can be heard loud and clear.
In an age of podcasts and streaming, local radio may seem old-fashioned. But for many of us on the Darling Downs, it remains a daily ritual. A voice we trust, and a constant companion on tractors, during the daily commute and over morning coffees.
As we approach 100 years since that first broadcast, let’s reflect on the power of local storytelling, the resilience of regional media, and the role stations like 864 Triple M have played in shaping Toowoomba. Here’s to the next century of keeping it local, loud and proud. Email admin@toowoombachamber.com.au
