For the dysfunctional Savage family, Christmas day is always held at the decadent Gold Coast family home. Brenda Savage, a resentful and ageing- in-denial ‘WAG’ wife, and James Savage Snr, a megalomaniac ex-football legend, are empty nesters (apart from Gucci-loving poodle Bubbles).
Daughter Davina (formerly David) is their adopted middle child who came out three years ago and hasn’t seen the family since. First-born Jimmy Savage Jnr is a mentally ill wannabe rapper with a gambling debt and service weapon (he’s a police officer on probation). Rounding out the disappointments is daughter Leia, a stay-at-home mum and spiritual pill- popper, married to an absent real estate developer.
Davina arrives for Christmas lunch, introducing trans boyfriend (andveterinarian) Kane, to an awkward reception. Jimmy and Leia (her creepy twins in tow) embrace the duo and all are shown James and Brenda’s new toy: a wildly over-the-top spa bath.
As ‘fun’ Uncle Dick (James’s brother) arrives in full (albeit lice-ridden) Santa regalia, it’s time to begin the Savage family traditions: booze, dessert first up, and the ‘Gypsy Present Swap’, which involves an inappropriate dildo gift from Jimmy. But the kids receive Scratchies for Christmas (instead of the $10,000 cheques they’re accustomed to), and Christmas facades begin to unravel.
Kane tries to help the family, but clashes with Brenda in the kitchen. Davina confronts James Snr about using her ‘dead name’ as he reminisces about her footy days as a talented (and male) high-school protege. Dick finds a discarded scratchie to be a winner and plans to woo his secret-love Brenda with an elopement.
Christmas isn’t Sacred. It’s Savage
A desperate Jimmy Jnr needs cash fast though and blackmails Leia into help with the family safe. They find it empty apart from James’s famous football medal and a few old letters that reveal Leia is adopted also. Meanwhile, Bubbles finds Leia’s pills and collapses as Uncle Dick is led to believe it’s his fault, enlisting Jimmy Jnr to help him hide the dead dog. In a bid to reconnect with Davina, James Snr thrusts backyard footy on the family before an over-cooked Xmas lunch ensues. Turkey tension is palpable as Davina speaks for Leia’s injustice and family secrets come to a head. Jimmy’s hitman creditor Peter arrives with a terrifying ultimatum: $20k cash or Jimmy’s head, but is starstruck by James Snr’s presence. As James reveals he’s broke, Peter claims the medal as payment but Bubbles has come to life and swallowed it. Dick produces the winning scratchie which is found to be a dud, and reveals he is Jimmy’s real father. James Snr attacks him and Peter is knocked out by the dildo as a stray bullet hits the chandelier – injuring Brenda.
In hospital, the family await outcomes for Brenda, Uncle Dick and Peter. They all pull through with Kane convincing James not to give up his prized medal. Peter accepts the spa as payment and the family find peace on their back deck for Boxing Day, as Bubbles finally discards the medal.
